Kopi tiam
in our younger days, the kopi tiam or coffee shop was the community gathering place where people go for a cup of kopi n kaya, butter toast.it represented the social glue,a place for retirees to talk coffee shop politics, aunties after marketing sit n gossip, etc.it also represented a part of multi racial malaysia in that in the morning there is a stall selling nasi lemak from wooden bins and at nite, the satay guy .
then the other hotspot was the medan selera or foodcourt with stalls of all races.the roti canai guy in his sarong, the pak cik selling nasi campur or the wantan noodle stall.its was a cacophony of noise from blaring radio n hawkers shouting orders across the space.we were the tailors children and most of the hawkers knew us as children.today when i ordered takeout at SS2 glutton street, the drinker seller remembered me n jun.Wheres the fat Boy?he likes to drink ais batu campur or shaved ice and leng chee keng,a chinese dessert.we love street food from the time in Ming Tien in which waiters dressed in hawaii shirts, palm trees next to the tables n palm thatched huts with huge tv to watch football.
i feel street food is delicious makan n lying in bed for a week in hospital,i went overboard with overeating once i was discharged from grilled satay, hokkien mee, char koay teow, nasi lemak, roti jala n oyster omelette or chien. i miss good food.
