To combat inflation due to overwhelming consumer demand,Bank Negara will raise OPR rate to reduce monetary supply in the market.Consumers will have to fork out more interest for housing, car loans and businesses will have less capital expenditure to expand business operations. When this happens,it will dampen consumer demand and expansion of businesses. Will it lead to a weaker business climate, sluggish retail sales and lower demand for goods and services?
But this inflation is not due to overwhelming demand but supply side disruption due to covid lockdown,a war and economic sanctions by western nations. Why shoot ourselves on the foot to kill the ants crawling on it? To cripple the economy when it is just recovering from 2 years lockdown is counterproductive.
