In March i wrote a post on art as life and life as art after i watched the indie movie starring Michelle Yeoh and Jamie Lee Curtis. It was a chaotic comedy thriller that zooms between past, present and future.
In our troubled times,we need to maintain an open dialoque and that dialogue is through Art.Imagination sets us free from the limitation of reality.im so so thrilled to see our malaysian actress Michelle Yeoh acting in an indie movie, everything, everywhere, all at once that is sci fi,based on an asian migrant theme of intergenerational conflict and starring the awesome Jamie Lee Curtis. its time that the story of asian chinese migrants be known globally .
Well the indie movie Everything, everywhere, all at once defies the stereotypical rags to riches Asian migrant movie like Crazy ,Rich Asians or the combative kung fu protagonist. It tells the humble lifestory of Asian migrants in Chinatown usually involved in food business, laundry business, small traders or manicurists. It tells the hardwork juggling the taxes and customers in a laundromat while bringing up a child,Joy.Michelle defied her parents and ran away to the US to marry her boyfriend. There is intergenerational conflict between Michelle and her father and between mother and daughter who has a gay partner.
This crazy, chaotic movie is set in the multiverse or parallel universe where good battles evil represented by the bloodsucking internal revenue office pursuing its prey.
It juxtaposes the old values with the new, and parent child conflict, the conflict between control over our own lives and living up to societal expectations, the conflict between the ideal dream and the sordid reality.
As rogerebert reviewed in the movie, its finally optimism that wins over despair.
"If the void arises from the compounding of generational trauma, the Daniels posit that it can be reversed through the unconditional love passed down through those same generations, if we choose compassion and understanding over judgment and rejection. Chaos reigns and life may only ever make sense in fleeting moments, but it’s those moments we should cherish. Moments of love and camaraderie. Sometimes they happen over time. Sometimes they happen all at once. "
