New ideas for language learning

It will be a big challenge to attract students to read for pleasure in the internet age when exciting games n social media entices the young. The younger students dont read for pleasure as they grew up in a visual text era and instant gratification .Its so hard to visualise written narratives and wait for climax of plot to unfold and reaching the conclusion The use of emoticons and memes and avatars has deteriorate skills in face to face communication and ability to interpret body language and detect tonal shifts in speaking. when asked most students read for academic purpose ans majority read one book for pleasure a year and some only read manga or comics. I forsee a demise in literature and poetry in modern society for more functional use of reading and writing.forget the great classics of literature when even contemporary fiction works are ignored. Im still traditionalist when the human condition was the concern of writers and painters. When i viewed the digital art installation in Rex KL,I was sorely disappointed by the lack of a gripping narrative. The digital show PiYing dreams a shadow puppet by the China motion graphics Temple of Lights that i saw in RexKL with french collaboration was a million times superior in the quality of motion graphics and artistry and narrative quality.Whai i viewed in Batik Malaysia was like no more than a propagandic attempt at aggrandisement with iconic buildings, personality and no narrative development.I felt embarrassed to introduce my foreign friend to a boring low quality digital animation when Malaysian graphics had reached Hollywood standard like the tiger in tbe Life of Pi was done by a Malaysian arthouse and Seafood the movie funded by Al Jazeera so please dont showcase substandard artwork.buat saya malu dan hilang air muka saja. Now my German excolleague has extensive experience in language training and i learnt so much from her in using dance, movement and songs to motivate language learning. Her experience in theatre and stand up comedy and acting made me realise the lack of expressiveness in body language of Asian language learners. She gave me good ideas to develop EQ in learning communication. For example i could mime a scenario in which a guest is honoured by being served a disgusting delicacy like sheep eyeballs or soup torpedo or bulls testicles for dinner and they use body language to decline eating it without offending the host.not easy to get away with hospitality of host. I feel that introducing literature could be done through drama or short movie making and poetry through poetry slam or choral speaking. The literary pursuit has to be kept alive by re engaging the young to read, act and recite. Just like great paintings, great literature are part of humanistic development in culture. What i saw in the digital art installation in Rex KL is the dehumanizing effect of technology that has lines and shapes and concrete structures and objects but non humans take centre stage in a bleak world devoid of warmth and vibrancy of human vitality.
