End of Greek lesson

im not satisfied with how the novel ended in that this is a wholly unexpected conclusion.What can two disconnected souls have in common ? it leaves a bittersweet aftertaste .One is going blind and the other never speaks a word.I dont think its love but an aberration absurd form of longing.
