The manufacturing of armed conflict
War is big business for those involved in maufacturing military ammunition and drones and military heavy equipment. This lucrative trade results in deaths and casualties of unarmed civilians as seen in Ukraine Russia conflict, the Gaza war between Isreal and Palestine and the civil war in Myanmar.
Not surprising that in Myanmar ,the military junta hardware supply chain involves the big guns like Russia,China,India and Isreal but the shocking fact is Asean nations like Singapore and Thailand are implicit in this arms trade so on the one hand they wave the Zopfan flag but behind the back profit from the armament global trade business.Seems like war is more profitable than peace.check out action on armed violence.org.uk.AOAV.org.uk
How will Malaysia as Asean chair take matters to resolve this.Asean comprises states with differing political systems from absolute monarchy of Brunei, parliamentary monarchy of Malaysia and Cambodia and Thailand, communist run system of Vietnam n Laos ,parliamentary democracy of Singapore n Philippines, indonesia and military dictatorship of Myanmar. Not an easy feat to cooperate and work together as a regional bloc.Surprisingly the nations that dont see their own people become migrant labour is the communist run Vietnam and Laos.Imdonesia,Philippine n even Malaysia has sizeable population of migrant workers employed out of their motherland, not forgetting the slave labour of military dictatorship that controls remittances of migrant workers who repatriate foreign earnings back to their motherland.
The two smallest Asean nations,Singapore and Brunei are the richest but where Bruneis wealth is due to natural resources ,Singapore is due to human resources.
We live in interesting times as when maritime disputes occur in the South China Sea,what will be the common stance of Asean be?
Lets see if 2025 will bring any new developments to Asean or will it sink into impassive and standstill status quo as no one is sticking out its neck to risk rocking the boaf.
