What death can teach us
just view BJ Miller talk on youtube at a TED talk.the guy is an amputee due to accident and works in zen hospice in the US.As Morrie Schwartz says when you learn how to die,you will learn how to live.
he describes how in an intense burn unit, lying in a windowless room surrounded and hooked up to machines,he said that exquisite moment a nurse smuggled a snowball n put it into his palm,he felt the wonder of nature and feeling it melt brought feel good emotions of seeing snowflakes, the soft flurry falling of snow blanketing the earth.he was a survivalist and went on to work in a hospice .he talks on how sensuous momemts remind us of the joy of being alive.the kitchen was the most memorable part in a hospice and altho patients cant eat much, the aroma of baking cookies brings joy to them.dying need not be a cold clinical experience but patiemts should have access to the aesthetics that evoke joy of life, like music art, food, etc as compared to anaesthetic that numbs us.
so hospice should be designed with healing the soul.have pets that offer comfort and unconditional love, have art therapy and orchestra and dance spaces.have gardens of blooming plants, sculpture n fountains, playground equipment.a hospice should not be like a hospital.thats why the dying prefer to die at home surrounded by the memories of having lived well, and having a chance to bid farewell to loved ones.
