today is May 13th a bad luck day in western calender and the darkest period in Malaysian history in which racial conflict between the Malays and Chinese in the aftermath of the elections saw many ethnic Chinese being slaughtered.i was still small but the fear of my Chinese neighbours and parents were so vivid.there was a curfew and we could only stock up on food at certain times the violent scenes on black and white tv showed shops being looted,property damaged and thugs beating up ethic Chinese.the adults talked in hushed tones to avoid frightening us children.school was suspended and my dad and the male neighbpurs formed a brigade for self defence of family.racial polarization is causing ethnic tension even to this day when policies are institutionized as the majority are the privileged groups while the minority are the marginalized group.but those who benefitted the most are the elite with well connected political ties and access to power. this May 13 should be open to discussion by the younger generation so that it shouldnt be swept under the carpet as a sensitive issue or o

fficial secret acts used to silence critics.or else history keeps repeating itself.indonesia had uaed the same racial card to dominate the political atena and many indonesian chinese migrated to Australia,Singapore n Hong Kong to start new lives. today i cooked mee Jawa or mee rebus with chilli spce,mashed sweet potato,pumpkin,carrot n tomato in a tamarind stock.i added sambal squid,eggs n fried taufu.i made a rose syrup with basil seeds drink.tonite ill cook cantonese food i cook scallops with lee kum kee XO sauce n brocolli,squid sambal and a watercress chicken soup with red dates n dried oysters.
