Childhood playground
Growing up in a shophouse with a busy wet market and main road in State and a food court behind our shop,im lucky MPPJ landscaped an old mining pond in Taman Jaya into a childrens playground. In primary school,we and the neighnbourhood kids ran to play on the slides n swings in the evening. We were one of the first residents in State and my dad used to go fishing in the mining pool at the weekends and caught tilapia, lampan and even a huge big head grass carp as long as a child.Dad proudly took photos with the fish and those pictures bring back good memories of us kids catching tadpoles n guppies in the stream that is now a big longkang.
The saplings after 50 to 60 years are now towering shady trees .the relaxing park is public space for joggers and zumba dancers.the council has landscaped the park well
Exercise and sports are good ways to bridge racial and religious diffetences exploited by Malaysian politicians as a tool to divide and rule.
it is time for us baby boomers who grew up in more harmonious times to reclaim the public narratives from the bigots and racists who use social media to fan the flames of hate speech. From the incidents viralised to incite intolerance like the KK mart incidents or pak cik slapping non muslim eating to chicken ham sandwich, these incidents cause us to view the others with suspicions and fear.so i suggested to the zumba group that has Malays,Indians n Chinese exercisers to have an open house kongsi raya potluck to establish goodwill n foster better understanding.Food and fun unite us more than toxic viral posts.
