Seeking solace
today i rummaged thro my library to seek solace after viewing the suffering, the death and destruction of world of mortals.the Dhammapada or the words of truth consists of 423 verses in Pali uttered by Buddha on 305 occasions.
the copy i had is published by sasana abhiwurdhi wardhana society with beautiful illustrations by a sri lanka artist.
the preface reads
"one cant read the sermon on the mount without feeling its an abridged version of the Dhammapada (SomaThera -the contribution of Buddhism to world culture)
The moral teaching of Buddha has a remarkable resemblance to theSermon on the Mount( B H Streeter -the Buddha and the Christ)
To love ones enemies,to bless them that curse,to do good to them that hate,to turn the other cheek,to give all to him who asks,to leave the cloak with him who takes the cloak are all the teachings of Jesus which are precepts taught and practised in their extreme rigour by the Buddha( Dr S Radhakrishnan)
The Bhagavad Gita and Thirukural are Hindu works in Sanskrit and Tamil of great antiquity.the former is ancient work of literature and the latter was composed just before the Christian era.but both contain many of the truths which are expressed in the Dhammapada.hence the Dhammapada may be considered a work that reaches all of humanity which underscores our common heritage on this earth.
