Steampunk puppet theatre
Papa’s Time Machine” uses life size puppets with a steam punk aesthetic to tell a compelling story of family devotion, love and loss.steampunk is a western concept but the nearly life size manipulation of the puppets is based on Japanese bunraku theatre with puppeteers all dressed in black with face covered up.the cultural fusion is thrilling as its is western, japanese with a chinese story.
Ma Liang or Maleon is a shanghai visual artist.he worked as an advertising creative director before he quitted to follow his dream to be an artist.
he produced the steampunk theatre show as a tribute to his dad who was a famous theatre director of over 80 peking operas.his aging dad had Alzheimer and this collaborative father son project created a close bond between them as it revived old memories of his fathers latent passion.the story is autobiographical as the magic time machine can let the father relive his past and the memory of people he worked with.
MaLiang almost abandoned the puppet show as he had difficulty getting funding but his passion for his craft got him sponsors.
now if this show is performed for foreign tourists like ZhangYi Mous impression of Li jiang or impressions of Yunnan ,it would be another tourist attraction like how Andrew Lloyd Webbers musical theatre Cats,Miss Saigon or phantom of the opera draws tourists.
i would love to view this puppet show as the theme is universal, the bridge between two generation
