The exodus

Hong Kong has seen an exodus of both expats n local professionals since the start of the covid pandemic.some sources estimated the figure at 300,000.Many in the field of law, finance n recruitment are relocating to the US,UK,Canada and Australia.Just as many are lured to Singapore,Tokyo,Thailand and Dubai.

Hong Kong has topped the list as the most expensive city to live in the world for expats,3 years in a row, only superseded by Turkemistan last year.

Apart from that, stringent covid rules that separated parents from children, fear of the infringement of freedom due to National Security Law implementation ,and rise of competitors like Singapore and Dubai is all a threat to its ability to retain the talent pool.

If there is no incentive to stay like better affordable housing, good educational policies or better work life balance, the push factor will be stronger than the pull factor.

Malaysia my second home need to revamp its policies to attract potential investors and high net worth individuals. The flip flop policies, indiscriminate handling of legal cases and political turbulence scares away the new breed of digital nomads and potential investors.

In a way,Im glad to have worked and live in a nation free of natural disasters like earthquake, typhoon or volcanic eruptions. Most disasters here are manmade and due to mismanagement. The weather is great for outdoor activities, the food is affordable and diverse and i can getaway to the seaside or mountains for short breaks.i can afford to buy my own car which i cant afford to in Singapore as the Certificate of Entitlement cost an arm and a leg.I can own a reasonably sized apartment withour skipping meals.if i like,i can employ part time maids to clean the apartment when im too sick to do it.The medical care is good as hospitals are accessible. The shopping malls are everywhere and has everything under one roof.
